Opening Theme & Notes

I am currently finishing up my entry for "Intersecting Interests". Have a beautiful weekend, everyone :] -Ana Olivia.
** I hope you have a good day Ana! We'll hopefully have another meetup next month or so. Check back on https://events.indieweb.org in a week or two to see when the next event is scheduled.

Introductions

  • capjamesg - lives in Scotland, runs James Coffee Blog, but is nominally about coffee, mostly about the world.
  • Robert - found the event through connecting with Tracy Durnell on the DFOS (Dark Forest Operating System https://app.dfos.com/spaces/nce.) Trying his hand at satire on Substack, aspires to be a modern-day Jonathan Swift. Here's my attempts at satire! Just started in Feb! https://robertlin.substack.com/s/the-robertlandian
  • Daniel - lives in Texas, enjoyed January's edition so much it was the highlight of his month.
  • Template:zacharykai - silent and taking notes, currently living in Greece. Currently running February's IndieWeb Fiction Carnival if anyone's interested! https://indieweb.org/IndieWeb_Fiction_Carnival
  • Nicole - Tropical Retribution is my First short Story about cyber thriller/horror/ espionage. Also, some scifi in The works. Its on youtube for free as an Audiobook. Poetry as well.

Topics Discussed

What Does 'Balance' Mean In Writing

  • Balancing what you want to write and read and you think your 'audience' will
    • A specific tension here for online writing is considering search engines and how people find your work (pat berlinquette made a good video about this on IG)
    • Personal sites often 'rank' for unexpected things, which can sometimes cause pressure on maintaining them
    • Writing for oneself is enjoyable and life-giving, but it can often be a lonely endeavor
    • Inspiring a written piece by writing to excite, entertain, or provoke a specific person
  • Balancing life so one has time for writing in the first place
  • Different modes of writing: dedicated consistency for long-term projects otherwise nothing might get done
  • Cranking out posts are easier when you harness the initial spark of inspiration
  • Monthly dispatches (public diary/confessional) as a motivation to write regularly
  • Does publishing on the web affect what you write, especially given attention span?
    • Designing for accessible reading experiences can make a huge difference
    • Accessible writing doesn't have to mean 'over-simplification' or not experimenting
    • Everyone uses the internet differently and there are always outliers (design for the edgecases or the masses?)

Organizing Writing On The Web

  • Creating a graph to show intersections between all categories on one's blog to see if there's a throughline
    • What if just the throughline is just the writer themselves? Or their way of seeing the world
    • Don't name something after an interest, because what if you want to write about something else?
      • I had this challenge! I ended up calling my Substack Robertland - the throughline is me!!! πŸ™‚
      • Tracy Durnell Had an old blog called Cascadia Inspired for exploring the Pacific Northwest but some of her writing didn't fit that topic so she transitioned to one under her own name
    • Blogs often have a theme for a reason other than being a personal hobby
      • A blog as someone's house: most homes don't have a theme, so if it does, it sometimes doesn't feel as lived-in
  • Having guiding principles or a direction vs being boxed-in artifically
  • Sharing different aspects of yourself: a blog allows you to do that beautifully
    • One part of you might be more interested in technical writing, another might be more keen on art
    • A window into your past self in all its complexity through what you were thinking at the time

Writing Fiction On One's Blog

  • Several folks do/want to
  • Some people get put off by the seeming enomirty of the task: but it can be super short, a fragment, a flash
  • A project jo is currently working on: a fictionalized journal as an exploratory excersise and a daily-ish writing pratice (available over telnet on port 2002)
  • Struggling to commit/finish when beginning something is so easy
  • Making fiction writing easier for yourself: having prompts or visual aids for ideas
    • A writing prompt capjamesg recieved: write a museum plaque for a statute, then a 100-word story
  • Writing non-fiction seems more 'acceptable/adult/mature' online, so fiction doesn't get done as often
  • Writing fiction has unique challenges compared to non-fiction: creating scenarios from scratch than just synthezing and stringing ideas together. It exercises a different part of the brain. As does poetry!
    • Recommendation from jo and Robert: everyone should write fiction/poetry at least one!
  • Somehow the internet is more associated with non-fiction so reading fiction in that medium can be harder
  • Publishing fiction and groups for writers: email Template:zacharykai for suggestions! hi@zacharykai.net

= Interpetability/Context In Writing

  • Do readers/writers have different expectations of the experience and themselves in fiction vs. non-fiction
    • Perhaps there's something inherently more revealing/vulnerable than non-fiction, even personal essays
      • There's an objectivity or at least 'crowdsourced' opinons in non-fiction, there's no chance of hiding behind that in fiction because you have to make everything up from scratch, which says a lot about you.
    • The writer has less control over how a fictional pieces is interpreted by a reader which is potentially scary!
      • Does the author's intentions matter at all in fiction? Such is the endless debate!
      • Publishing fiction means giving up control
      • Buying used books often means the books are already annotated, which can be a gift in seeing how others interpret works and how their brains work
      • But really, every piece of writing, genre regardless, is recieved differently by different people
      • How much do you explain to the reader vs letting them decide for themselves? How much can you let go?
        • Poetry especially wrestles with this because you can be as explicit or as vague as you wish
  • When you write, then edit, sometimes you find a sentence that could have two meanings, even when you'd only meant it one way. Do you need to clarify it or can you let it be?
  • First impressions are best formed without context or critisim, best to only form those on a second reading
Ambiguity
  • Blogging as an excersise in sitting with ambiguity: https://daniel.industries/2025/11/05/ambiguous-work/
    • The road can still be clear even if the end isn't, and vice-versa
  • Deliberatly making your writing ambiguious forces the reader to not take what you write at face-value
  • Attempting to make things as specific and umambigious is often a losing battle because ever
  • Complexity and straightforwardness often get misaquated with elitism and accessibility
  • Things that ask more questions than they answer seem to have fallen out of favor in pop culture
    • 'Content' online seems to 'do better' if there's a cut-and-dry conclusion or hardline opinion
    • Template:zacharykai rants about this to himself in his head endlessly: where has all the nuance gone?
    • I'll make sure to bring this up! - James
    • It's fascinating how much you can learn if you're willing to step outside your own thoughts
  • Is ambiguity at odds with specificity, or do they work together in the learning/thinking process?

Writing As Thinking Things Through

  • Begin with the conclusion of a post and see where it leads you: you might surprise yourself
    • You don't have to publish something if it doesn't go anywhere
  • Ending a piece of non-fiction online with a question or 'reply via email' button; this post was a response to another blogger's closing questions https://daniel.industries/2025/11/22/why-write-online/
    • An 'engagement hack' for the IndieWeb and a way of inciting questions
    • It's basically the IndieWeb version of 'like and subscribe!' - the IndieWeb as a republic of letters
    • And this often completes the cycle as an email exchange turns into a post!
  • Isn't the whole point of writing to continuely find new and interesting questions to ponder?
  • Blog posts as conversations and posts inspired by real-world conversations
  • Writing as process of consolidation or processing something (in complement or adjacent to conversation)
    • Social media or 'the cozy web' or chat/discussions as a generative space or layers for building upon ideas
  • 300-1000 words seems to be the sweet spot for holding people's attention in blog posts
    • Editing something down as a courtesy for readers, an act of loving curation
    • When everything 'competes' with everything else on the internet, it's not a great reading environment!
    • Printing long-form blog posts out or sending them to your e-reader for a better context and focus
      • Allowing folks to export your blog posts as ePUB files to allow for this?
  • Your ability to focus on someone's work often correlates with your trust or relationship with them/their art

Writing Formats & Length

  • Do long or short written works facilitate better conversations? Perhaps it depends on the aim
  • Where do you end your pieces? How do you end them?
  • capjamesg's motto for his writing on his blog is build a bunch of small houses to make a village rather than one mansion
    • Essays need construction, blog posts act as their own building blocks
  • Some of the earliest blogs were the modern day link blogs or micro blogs (more rabbit-hole beginnings than original thinking or opuses, but blogging 'norms' are always shifting)
  • 'Digital gardening' vs 'chronological blogging' as a way of organizing works
    • The tendency is almost always additive or stacking more and more
    • Perhaps the medium of hypertext encourages this
  • Creating context and metadata and labeling systems for your works

Writing In Community

Nicole- Iam interested in joining. Im trying to write 1k words a day before noon. Perhaps 6am to 8am for myself for next couple years. I'm on DFOS.

  • Hosting events take so much work, and often more than the participants realize. It's hard to maintain these things! We take 'glue' people for granted far too often.
    • Event-hosting is an art-form! And a skill that's valuable to learn.

Off-The-Cuff Remarks

  • 'We can talk about letters, but I prefer words. They make more sense.'
  • 'In fiction, suddenly you're responsible for the entire universe.'
  • 'The read-it-later graveyard.'
  • "I want to make that work less thankless, so thank you."
  • "Go write something!'

"Running my local movie club (https://robertl.in/bmc/) for my friends radicalized me. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ"
