Unknown parameters

When will VE add preview warning? This could help those who aren't aware of unknown parameters. Ahri Boy (talk) 20:22, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bump this BIG time. Really need this added. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:42, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
This probably needs a Phabricator ticket to get any attention. Provide lots of details and links. WMF developers probably don't read this talk page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:39, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the Phabricator ticket is T422302. Any additional info you could add to it about why preview warnings would be useful would be helpful to us as we prioritize our work! Cheers, Sdkb‑WMFtalk 08:10, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

VisualEditor on talk pages

Should we implement VisualEditor mode on talk pages? User97104: Overview (communications, numbers) 21:55, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes please! And throughout the project namespace too (if it breaks any pages, we could move them to their own namespace until fixed) Superb Owl (talk) 21:01, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The visual editor can't support :::::indenting comments. Use the Reply tool's visual mode: It's the same software underneath, and it handles indentation, signatures, and most edit conflicts automatically. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:34, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Upcoming Discord call about VE

Hi all! The foundation has been hosting a series of work-in-progress calls with the community on the Wikimedia Discord, and our next one this Friday at 17:00 UTC will focus on the VisualEditor. Please feel free to join! (And if you're not on Discord, no worries, I'll be following up on-wiki afterwards.) Cheers, Sdkb‑WMFtalk 23:32, 14 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update: We've had to postpone the call; I'll post here again when we've rescheduled it. Cheers, Sdkb‑WMFtalk 21:36, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Visual editor now being forced onto users?

I've never used visual editor, but recently clicking 'edit' (normally this says 'edit source') has loaded the visual editor for me. I have turned visual editor off in the settings and this has resolved it but I never had this issue before and I did not change nor reset my settings recently. Traumnovelle (talk) 06:29, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

And its come back despite disabling it... Traumnovelle (talk) 20:39, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Traumnovelle, go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-editor and check your "Editing mode". WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:36, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I turned it off. After it never being an issue in the past. Traumnovelle (talk) 06:00, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The default setting has changed over the years, but based on when your account was created, I suspect that your account defaulted to "Remember my last". That means if you manually switch into the visual editor for a moment (definitely recommended if you ever need to add, remove, or rearrange columns in a table, by the way), it has a 'sticky' setting that keeps you there until you manually switch back, and vice versa. Personally, I prefer to have both tabs showing, though I can see how this would be more confusing for newbies. Maybe one of those Echo/Notification milestone messages should encourage experienced editors to review their preferences settings. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:52, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stupid question

The visual editor only produces <ref>...</ref> tags around citations, is that correct? There's no direct support for explanatory footnotes, correct? (Yes, I know you can do a workaround by just typing in "manual citation" window, but I'm new to the editor and don't know if I somehow overlooked a "footnote" tab.) ---- CharlesTGillingham (talk) 15:58, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Have you tried inserting an {{efn}} template? That should work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:06, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
So I take it that the answer is no, right? Where do I request a feature? ---- CharlesTGillingham (talk) 20:34, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's not a "no". That's me suggesting how to do it. Insert an instance of {{efn}}. That's the template for explanatory footnotes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:24, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
