This is intentional. The website gives all names in "first, last" order. Therefore, the template converts this to 'last, first' by making the last word 'last' and all other words 'first'. As the name is 'Lieut. Col. Sir Frederic Smith (RE, FRS)', this becomes 'FRS), Lieut. Col. Sir Frederic Smith (RE,'.

To fix this, the person using the template must set |last-length=3, which tells the template the last name is three words long, so it becomes 'Smith (RE, FRS), Lieut. Col. Sir Frederic'. The documentation page for the template explains this, but induces the incorrect formatting in the process to demonstrate this.
