Better template message needed for accidental users of open or anonymizing proxy servers.

Proxy block screenshot on Wikipedia

Having logged on to my user account with a new Android device (which uses Puffin Browser as default), I found myself blocked with a warning message for operating via an open or anonymizing proxy. After the initial panic had subsided, and after over half an hour of checking my IP address, my network and my WiFi connection, a Google search finally revealed that the browser was itself acting as a proxy server and its IP address was blacklisted. - not something I was aware the browser was doing.

I have no idea how many other browsers operate in this way, but it would have been immensely helpful if the blocking template text had suggested this as one possible cause to investigate. I wonder how many other users get bamboozled by the over-technical template text, or by the subsequent lack of information on possible browser problems at this Help page (to which blocked users are directed when they don't understand the warning.)

So, I'd like to suggest that the following line be considered for inclusion as the penultimate sentence in the warning template:" ... (such as a virus). Alternatively, check whether you are using a browser that acts as a proxy. For more info . . ."

It would seem a simple and effective enhancement. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 01:05, 21 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Can you add the merger template to this page because I'm proposing that Wikipedia:What to do if you are blocked be merged into this article? 50.255.141.222 (talk) 15:57, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not done: Although I think the merger is not necessary, I have placed the mergefrom tag here on your behalf for notification purposes. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 17:46, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Can you clarify something. Does the IRC Libera.Chat mean to use your Wikipedia Username/password as login credentials?

[edit]

Can you clarify something. Is one suppose to use your same Wikipedia Username/password for the Libera.Chat (IRC) login mentioned on this page? Or a separate one? Otherwise how would W/p tie whatever review to whichever ID? CaribDigita (talk) 01:12, 19 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Should the IRC section be removed? Does anyone still process unblock requests there? voorts (talk/contributions) 22:37, 26 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
