spam or misuse accounts

There are a small handful of Mastodon or Bluesky accounts that are either spamming the #indieweb hashtag, or overzealously using it for a post that happens to be posted on an indieweb site (and syndicated to Mastodon), but is not about anything actually indieweb related.

Until we have a mechanism to block these accounts from the stream hashtag feeds, we (as a community) must manually remove their spam from the chat archives on a daily basis.

FAQ

How does blog search work?

There is a manually managed list of blogs that are subscribed to in Aperture. The Aperture channel has some additional filtering to only show posts that include relevant keywords (listed in "blog search" above).

There has been some discussion about automating this more, perhaps from chat-names, but it is still manual as of 2026-06-08.

Why is my Mastodon post not appearing?

The Mastodon RSS feeds mentioned above are aggregated into one feed which is then subscribed to in Aperture. The Aperture channel has some additional filtering to only show posts that include relevant keywords (listed in "blog search" above). In some instances of federating posts to Mastodon, the hashtag does not appear in the post content, so even if you used #indieweb, the text "indieweb" does not appear in the post and is excluded from the stream.

This is our understanding as of 2026-04-29 and may be updated in the future.
