2026 Media Convergence: How AI Quietly Took the Night Shift

Did you know that in 2026, media convergence in China is undergoing a quiet revolution?

In April this year, the National Radio and Television Administration officially released the Lightweight Production System Technology Application Guide, pushing county-level media centers to reduce costs and increase efficiency. What does that mean? It means that county media teams no longer need to spend tens of millions on broadcasting systems.

Another ground-level shift: many local stations are replacing bulky studio setups with lightweight tools. A single computer and a few open-source programs can now handle news gathering, editing, and broadcasting — work that once required entire suites of professional equipment. One county-level radio station built a full digital production pipeline for just over 30,000 yuan, from drafting to broadcast, fully automated.

The most surprising story? In Sydney, an AI virtual DJ called Thy worked at a local radio station for six months. Seventy thousand listeners never noticed a thing, until someone read the program website description and realized: AI has quietly taken the night shift.

One line to sum it up: AI didn't replace the host. It just took the repetitive work. The person is still the star.
