Authenticated SharePoint RCE: threat modeling CVE-2026-108452
Threat modeling CVE-2026-108452 starts with a simple question: what can a limited SharePoint identity ask the server to do? Microsoft says the CWE-22 path traversal issue can let an authorized attacker execute code over the network. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.8, and the vendor vector requires low privileges, so the identity boundary is central to the risk.
The modeled asset
The affected product is Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition on x64 systems, from 16.0.0 up to builds below 16.0.20326.20190. The fixed build is 16.0.20326.20190, delivered by KB5002927 on October 13, 2026. Farms that run SharePoint Workflow Manager also need KB5002799 first and, for classic installations, the stated debug flag step.
A SharePoint farm is a collection of trust relationships. Users can read and edit content, applications can act on their behalf, workflows can run with elevated identities, and administrators can change server behavior. A threat model should map those relationships before deciding how exposed the farm is.
Threat actors and preconditions
The lowest-cost scenario begins with a compromised ordinary user, a guest account, or a delegated application that can reach a vulnerable operation. The CVSS vector says no user interaction is required, but the attacker still needs network access and some level of authorization. The record does not establish that an anonymous visitor can exploit the issue.
The next scenario involves an insider or an attacker who has already acquired a low-privileged session. In that case, the question is whether the vulnerable path handling lets the attacker move beyond the permissions expected for that session and execute server-side code. The outcome can be more serious than the initial account suggests if the SharePoint service has access to data or connected systems.
High-level abuse path
The supported abuse path is a path containment failure followed by code execution. An authorized request supplies input that is interpreted outside the intended directory boundary. The vendor classifies the flaw as CWE-22 and confirms the remote code execution outcome. The exact endpoint and request format are not public in the record reviewed here.
That limitation should shape detection. Search for anomalous behavior around file paths, server-side processing, and authenticated requests, but avoid a narrow signature that assumes one unpublished vector. Correlate identity, request context, server-side file activity, and subsequent process behavior.
Impact
Confidentiality and integrity are High in the CVSS vector. Availability is not changed. A successful attacker could access or alter information available to the compromised SharePoint context. The resulting incident may also expose application credentials, workflow identities, or integrations if the farm is configured to use them.
Controls
The primary control is KB5002927, verified on every applicable server. Before and after the patch, reduce the reachable attack surface by limiting unnecessary authoring and administration paths. Review external sharing, partner accounts, application permissions, and stale low-privileged identities. Monitor authentication and server-side activity for behavior that does not match the account's normal role.
These controls need owners and completion checks. "Restrict access" is not complete until the network rule, identity group, or application permission has been changed and verified. "Monitor activity" is not complete until a detection rule or review process exists and has an alert destination.
Exposure context
ZoomEye returned 163,243 product-fingerprint matches for app="Microsoft SharePoint" on November 3, 2026. The CVE filter returned 0. The product count is useful for identifying internet-facing candidates, but it does not prove that a host runs the affected edition or build. Combine the external list with internal asset ownership and version data.
Conclusion
CVE-2026-108452 is not best treated as an anonymous internet takeover of every SharePoint instance. It is a post-authentication path traversal with a code execution outcome, which makes identity design, delegated access, and farm privilege important. Patch the confirmed vulnerable builds, then validate the assumptions that made the farm seem isolated.
